Charlie’s story

In 1994, Charlie Bigham hung up his suit, left his corporate job and went travelling. Inspired by his adventures, he decided to set up a different kind of food business that would stand the test of time. So that’s exactly what he did.

Charlie Bigham is a real person

You couldn't make him up! We know some people think that might be the case, but Charlie Bigham is very much a real person. His love of good food, people and the planet has always been at the heart of the brand. And as you’d expect, he tastes every new dish until he’s satisfied it’s as delicious as it can be.

The Charlie Bigham’s Journey

Having hung up his tie and left his job in corporate consultancy, Charlie and his girlfriend (now wife) go travelling to India in a yellow campervan.
Inspired by the flavours they encountered on their travels, Charlie starts creating dishes at home in his kitchen, selling them to independent food retailers in London.
Charlie Bigham’s dishes can now be found on the supermarket shelves in Waitrose – a hugely important moment for the business!
We move into our new kitchen in London’s Park Royal, where Charlie and the kitchen team still make food, develop and test new recipes to this day.
It’s time to take the pie world by storm! In our first foray into selling cooked food, we launch our range of tasty, fresh pies cooked in ceramic dishes.
Selling quality, delicious food in plastic containers just doesn’t feel right any longer, so in an industry first, we swap plastic packaging for wooden trays.
The business goes from strength to strength, with Charlie Bigham’s next big retailer listing – launching the range into Sainsbury’s!
We open our Somerset site, The Quarry – an eco-build designed to work with its environment. Many of our dishes are prepared here, bringing much-needed jobs to the area.
Our new packaging hits the shelves, complete with lovely illustrations by Emily Sutton that perfectly capture our passion for fresh ingredients and delicious food.
We achieve B Corp status, recognising the importance we place on our planet, our people and our communities (as well as on making delicious food, of course).
The Grocer Gold Awards name us Food Brand of the Year, with the judges praising us for our “constant innovation and expansion”.
Charlie appears in his first TV ads for the brand, bringing the story of our food – and our beautiful pack illustrations – to life!
